About this asme b31.3 tubing calculator
ASME B31.3 tubing calculator
ASME B31.3 Pipe Wall, Hoop Stress and Bend Thinning Calculator
A beginner-friendly ASME B31.3-2024 calculator using B36.10/B36.19 pipe schedules and selected API 5L, stainless, duplex, super duplex, and alloy 625 Table A-1 materials.
Use this ASME B31.3-2024 calculator with standard or custom tube dimensions to account for optional external pressure, calculate straight and bend pressure thickness, minimum clear ID, Eq. (3a)-equivalent hoop stress, hydrotest utilization, and a professional PDF report.
Common engineering uses
Common engineering uses
- Thin-wall process, utility, instrument, impulse, analyzer, and pipeline-component pressure checks under internal gauge pressure.

- Calculation-note preparation where allowable stress S, quality factor E, weld factor W, coefficient Y, allowances, wall tolerance, and Code limits must remain visible.
Outputs to review
Outputs to review

- Internal, external, and net pressure; minimum clear ID after weld protrusion; operating and hydrotest utilization; reverse-pressure validation; and a professional PDF report.
How to use this tool
How to use this tool
- Select the B36.10 or B36.19 NPS and schedule, exact Table A-1 material, and pipe construction.
- Enter internal and optional external pressure, metal temperature, purchase-specification minus tolerance, allowances, and any radial internal weld protrusion.
- Enter the actual bend centreline radius and hydrotest temperature; optionally enter the applied test pressure.
- Review straight and bend finished minimum walls, available thinning, hoop stress, hydrotest utilization, MAWP, and reverse check.
How to use the result
Select standard or custom dimensions, the Table A-1 material, and construction. Enter internal and optional external pressure, temperature, purchase-specification minus tolerance, allowances, radial weld protrusion, bend radius, and hydrotest conditions. Accept the pressure-wall result only when t < D/6, Pnet/(SE) is within the Code limit, straight and bend walls pass, and the separate external-pressure and remaining system checks are completed.
Assumptions, limitations, and formulas
Assumptions
No design input is prefilled; the worked example is loaded only on request and is clearly identified as an example.
Metric uses mm and MPa; Imperial uses in and psi. Both views convert to one consistent internal calculation basis, while B36.10/B36.19 dimensions remain traceable to the source tables.
Straight-line interpolation is used between tabulated stress, Y, and W temperatures where the Code permits interpolation.
Limitations
Applicable only while every calculated pressure thickness is less than D/6 and P/(SE) does not exceed 0.385.
Hoop stress is calculated by rearranging B31.3 Eq. (3a); para. 345.2.1 longitudinal stress and component-rating checks remain separate.
Does not implement Chapter IX, external-pressure buckling, branches, fittings, supports, vibration, fatigue, or thermal-load analysis.
A passing tube-wall result is not a complete B31.3 piping-system compliance determination.
Formula notes
Pressure design thickness: Pnet = Pi - Pe and t = Pnet D / [2(S E W + Pnet Y)], using B31.3-2024 para. 304.1.2, Eq. (3a); external collapse remains a separate para. 304.1.3 check.
Minimum required thickness: tm = t + c, para. 304.1.1, Eq. (2).
Bend pressure thickness uses para. 304.2.1 Eq. (3c) and its intrados, extrados, and sidewall factor I.
Hydrotest minimum pressure follows para. 345.4.2 and Eq. (24); hoop utilization is screened against Table A-1 minimum yield strength.
Selected minimum wall accounts for the entered manufacturer's minus tolerance; the calculator never inserts an unstated tolerance.
MAWP and reverse pressure substitution provide arithmetic checks independent of the displayed required wall.
Common questions
Does B31.3 use nominal wall or minimum wall for pressure design?
The selected pipe must provide a minimum wall, after the applicable manufacturer's minus tolerance, that is not less than the required finished wall. The schedule supplies nominal wall; the calculator converts it to selected minimum wall using the entered tolerance.
Why is the manufacturer's wall tolerance not prefilled?
B31.3 requires the selected thickness to consider the manufacturer's minus tolerance, but the applicable percentage comes from the purchase specification. Prefilling a customary value could silently apply the wrong product requirement.
Can a passing pipe result be used as the fitting pressure rating?
No. Fittings, valves, manifolds, connections, and other components need their own listed rating or qualified design at the coincident temperature, and the lowest system rating governs.
How can I validate the calculated result?
The tool reverse-substitutes the calculated Eq. (3a) thickness back to pressure and separately calculates MAWP from the selected minimum wall. The copyable verification sheet exposes every input, factor, bend location, and reference for an independent hand check.
